Message from Asia Regional Director and Oceanic Hub Director International Union for Conservation of Nature On the World Oceans Day 8th June 2021
Mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass meadows and marshes provide food and livelihoods to around two billion people in Asia. The marine and coastal ecosystems are at risks from climate change and biodiversity losses. Over the last 40 years, more than 40% of coral reefs and mangroves have been lost in the Asia Pacific alone.
In celebration of World Oceans Day, we, at IUCN re-affrm our commitment to help conserve and protect our oceans. Together, with all our member organisations and partners, we emphasise the need for strong collaborative undertakings to work together and apply our scientific knowledge into action. IUCN and DMCR have been working together to protect and restore the health of Thailand coastal ecosystems. With the strategic position of Thailand in the Asia region, this partnership is in the best position to contribute to making a difference in connecting ocean science with the needs of the society.
